Why the train

Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) is in Kulon Progo, far west of the city. By road the trip to Malioboro takes an hour and a half or more; the train does it in about 35–40 minutes and stops at Yogyakarta station (Tugu), a short walk from Malioboro street.

Departure times did not change with the new operator, according to KAI Commuter, but always check the current timetable in the app on the day.

If you land after the last train (about 21:30), take a DAMRI bus or a car.

Buying tickets

Since 17 September 2026 the airport train is run by KAI Commuter as Commuter Line Bandara YIA (before that by KAI Bandara, previously Railink). Tickets are sold up to seven days ahead:

  • C-Access (KAI Commuter app)
  • Access by KAI — foreigners register with a passport number
  • airport-train.kci.id — web booking
  • Vending machines at the airport station

Ticketing is now linked to the Yogyakarta commuter line, with combined tickets towards Solo planned. Whether foreign cards work in the apps varies; if one is declined, buy at the station machine.

Finding the station at YIA

The airport station is connected to the terminal building — follow the train signs from arrivals. Allow 10–15 minutes from the baggage hall to the platform, and buy your ticket before reaching the gates.

From Yogyakarta station you can continue by commuter train towards Solo. For Borobudur, it is quicker to go by car directly from the airport than via the city.
