Best eSIM for Bali and Indonesia: Prices, Networks and Who Should Skip One

Short answer

For most trips, a travel eSIM installed before the flight is the easiest way to land with working data. For heavy use on a budget, XL's own tourist eSIM is far cheaper (Rp70,000 for 30GB over 30 days) but needs your passport and phone IMEI. Travel eSIMs are data-only, so keep your home SIM active if you need calls or SMS codes.

eSIM, local SIM or roaming?

OptionBest forTrade-off
Travel eSIM (Airalo, Holafly, Nomad, Saily)Data working the moment you land, no paperwork in IndonesiaData only; more expensive per GB
XL tourist eSIMLong stays and heavy data users who want local pricesNeeds passport and IMEI at purchase; data plus 5 call minutes
Physical tourist SIM (Telkomsel)Phones without eSIM; you want an Indonesian numberPickup only in Bali and Lombok (Mandalika); ID check
Home roamingShort trips on a generous plan; you need your own numberUsually the most expensive option

Check two things first: your phone must support eSIM, and it must be carrier-unlocked. Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi and switch it on when the plane lands.

Prices compared

Prices were taken from each provider’s Indonesia page on 4 November 2026 and change often. Treat them as a measured snapshot.

What the table says in practice:

  • One or two weeks, normal use (maps, Grab, messages, some video): a 10GB plan is plenty. Nomad or Saily at around US$20 beat the unlimited plans.
  • Remote work or hotspotting a laptop: XL’s 55GB or 150GB tourist eSIM is in a different price league — but you buy it from XL with your passport and IMEI, so allow time for it.
  • You do not want to think about data at all: an unlimited plan works, but unlimited plans usually slow down after a daily fair-use amount.

Which network to pick

Opensignal’s July 2026 report (measured April–June 2026) gave Telkomsel the best coverage experience and XL the best download speeds, reliability and 5G availability. In practice:

  • Bali, Jakarta and the big Java cities: any network works; XL is usually fastest.
  • Nusa Penida, rural Lombok, Flores, Sumatra’s interior: Telkomsel is the safer choice.

Several travel eSIMs switch between two networks, which helps outside the cities.

Things that catch people out

  • No phone number. Travel eSIMs are data-only. Banks and some apps send codes by SMS — keep your home SIM switched on with data roaming off, so it can still receive SMS — check what your home provider charges for incoming texts abroad.
  • Emergency calls. A data-only eSIM cannot place normal voice calls. Keep your home SIM active or know where the nearest phone is; see emergency numbers in Indonesia.
  • Grab at the airport. You need data before you walk to the pickup point. That alone is reason enough to install the eSIM before you fly.
  • Phone registration. Travel eSIMs on a foreign phone do not need Indonesian IMEI registration. Local SIMs do — see the SIM card guide.

Questions travellers ask

Where should I buy a Bali eSIM?

Online before you fly, from the provider’s website or app, and install it at home on Wi-Fi. Turn the eSIM line on when the plane lands.

Why is my eSIM not working in Bali?

Usually one of three settings: the eSIM line is not switched on for mobile data, data roaming is off for the eSIM line (most travel eSIMs need it on), or the phone is still using your home SIM for data. Check all three before contacting support.

Should I get an eSIM or a physical SIM in Bali?

An eSIM if your phone supports it and you want data on landing without paperwork. A local SIM if you need an Indonesian number or plan to stay long — it needs your passport and a 90-day phone registration.
